What Is Golfer’s Elbow and Tennis Elbow?

Golfer’s elbow, medically known as medial epicondylitis or medial elbow tendinopathy, affects the tendons that attach certain forearm muscles to the bony prominence on the inside of the elbow. These muscles help control wrist movements and gripping activities.

Tennis elbow, medically known as lateral epicondylitis or lateral elbow tendinopathy, affects the tendons that attach the forearm muscles to the bony prominence on the outside of the elbow. These muscles are involved in extending the wrist and fingers and stabilising the wrist during gripping activities.

Both conditions can develop through repetitive loading, increased physical demands or changes in activity levels that exceed the tendons' current capacity.

Despite their sporting names, neither condition exclusively affects golfers or tennis players. They can develop in anyone whose work, hobbies or exercise regularly place demands on the wrist and forearm.

Symptoms may interfere with lifting, carrying, gripping equipment or completing everyday tasks. Although many cases improve with appropriate management, recovery times vary depending on symptom duration, physical demands and individual circumstances.

Common Symptoms And Warning Signs

Typical symptoms may include:

  • Inner Joint Tenderness: Localised discomfort around the bony area on the inside of the arm.

  • Forearm Aching: Symptoms that may extend down the inner forearm towards the wrist.

  • Reduced Grip Strength: Difficulty comfortably holding tools, sports equipment or household objects.

  • Discomfort During Wrist Movement: Increased sensitivity when bending the wrist or gripping against resistance.

  • Activity-Related Stiffness: Symptoms that become more noticeable during or after repetitive tasks.

  • Reduced Activity Tolerance: Difficulty completing movements that were previously comfortable.

These symptoms can have several causes. A professional assessment can help establish whether tendon-related overload or another condition may be responsible.

Possible Causes And Contributing Factors

Medial tendon problems are commonly associated with repeated or excessive loading of the wrist flexor and forearm muscles. It can also be due to an imbalance in your forearm muscle groups. Basic causes are overuse, new use, and abuse of the forearm muscles.

Potential contributing factors include:

  • Repetitive Gripping: Frequent use of tools, equipment or objects requiring sustained hand strength.

  • Sporting Activities: Repeated swinging, throwing or racquet movements

  • Sudden Training Increases: Increasing exercise intensity, frequency or resistance too quickly.

  • Occupational Demands: Manual tasks involving forceful gripping, lifting or repeated wrist movements.

  • Insufficient Recovery: Continuing demanding activities without allowing adequate adaptation.

  • Changes In Technique: Movement patterns or technique issues.or equipment changes that increase loading on the affected tissues.

There is not always one identifiable cause. Understanding how symptoms relate to your activities helps guide an appropriate management plan.

When To Seek Professional Advice

Consider arranging an assessment if discomfort persists more than 2 weeks, repeatedly returns or starts affecting your normal activities.

You may also benefit from professional guidance if gripping becomes difficult, symptoms interfere with sleep or previous self-management strategies have not helped.

Seek urgent medical assessment following a significant injury, particularly if there is marked swelling, deformity or an inability to move the joint. A hot, swollen joint accompanied by fever also requires prompt medical advice.

Persistent numbness, tingling or noticeable weakness should be assessed because these symptoms may indicate nerve involvement or another condition.

How We Help With Golfer's Elbow

At Resolve Physio Clinic SAC, we focus on understanding your symptoms, identifying relevant contributing factors and developing a practical rehabilitation programme suited to your needs.

Our approach combines musculoskeletal assessment with movement-based rehabilitation, education and selected hands-on techniques where appropriate.

We begin by discussing your symptoms, medical history, occupation, exercise habits and activities that aggravate or ease your discomfort.

We may assess:

  • Wrist and forearm mobility.

  • Grip strength and muscle function.

  • Tendon sensitivity and tolerance to loading.

  • Shoulder and upper-limb movement.

  • Relevant nerve-related symptoms.

  • Workstation, sporting or occupational demands.

This helps us determine which management options may be appropriate and whether further medical investigation is needed.

Depending on your assessment, we may recommend progressive strengthening, activity modification, mobility exercises or hands-on techniques and even Cervical and thoracic treatment.

Our aim is to support your ability to manage symptoms, rebuild physical capacity and gradually resume valued activities.

Recovery is not always linear, and no single intervention works for everyone. We review your response and adjust your programme as needed.

Methods And Services We May Recommend

Different approaches may be appropriate depending on the severity of your symptoms, how long they have been present and your individual goals.

Musculoskeletal Assessment And Rehabilitation

Our musculoskeletal and joint service focuses on assessing movement, strength, tissue sensitivity and functional limitations.

Progressive loading exercises are commonly used in managing tendon-related conditions. These exercises aim to improve the affected tissues' capacity to tolerate everyday demands.

We may also provide advice about modifying activities temporarily without unnecessarily avoiding movement if pain & symptoms are not too severe.

Exercise selection and progression depend on your symptoms and response.

Functional Movement Screening And Analysis

Discomfort around the inner arm can sometimes be associated with wider movement or loading demands.

Our functional movement screening evaluates relevant aspects of mobility, stability, strength and coordination.

For suitable individuals, this may help identify movement limitations that should be considered within a broader rehabilitation programme.

Screening does not predict every injury or establish a diagnosis on its own; however, it does guide you to the contributing factors to your golfer's elbow.

Specialist Sports Movement Assessment

For people whose symptoms affect their swing or sporting performance, our Titleist -MyTPI-based assessment considers mobility, stability and movement demands associated with the sport.

This can help inform exercise selection and activity modifications alongside the wider rehabilitation plan.

Where appropriate, we may work alongside your sports coach to help align physical rehabilitation with technique-related demands.

Acupuncture And Needling Techniques

We also offer acupuncture, integrated & dry needling as part of selected musculoskeletal management programmes.

These techniques involve inserting fine needles into specific areas and may be considered for symptom management following an individual assessment.

However, evidence for needling specifically for medial epicondylitis remains limited, and it should not be considered a guaranteed solution or replacement for progressive rehabilitation.

Suitability depends on your medical history, preferences and any relevant contraindications.

Who May Need Alternative Support?

Not every presentation of inner arm discomfort is caused by tendon overload, and some symptoms require investigation before rehabilitation begins.

We may recommend GP assessment or referral elsewhere if:

  • Symptoms began after a significant fall or direct injury.

  • There is substantial swelling, deformity or severe restriction of movement.

  • Persistent tingling or numbness suggests possible nerve involvement.

  • There are signs of infection, including fever, redness or unusual warmth.

  • Symptoms are unexplained, worsening or not responding as expected.

  • Another medical condition may be contributing to the problem.

Important Considerations

Tendon rehabilitation generally requires gradual progression and may take weeks or months, particularly when symptoms have been present for a long time.

Some discomfort during rehabilitation can be acceptable, but exercises should be adapted according to individual tolerance and response.

Hands-on techniques, strapping/braces or needling may be considered in selected circumstances, but none should be presented as universally necessary.

We explain suitable options and realistic expectations before agreeing on a plan.
