Physiotherapy-Led Acupuncture Treatment

It involves the use of fine needles at selected points of the body. Within physiotherapy, it may form one part of a wider approach to pain management, muscle function and recovery. Rather than focusing only on where you feel pain, I consider the wider picture. This can include joint movement, muscles, fascia, movement patterns and areas of overuse, underuse or compensation. Where appropriate, treatment can be combined with hands-on physiotherapy, strengthening, mobility work and movement retraining. What Can It Help With?

People consider acupuncture for a variety of reasons. At Resolve Physio Clinic, it is primarily incorporated into the management of musculoskeletal pain and movement-related concerns. Following an individual assessment, treatment may be considered for symptoms involving:

  • Lower back pain

  • Neck and shoulder discomfort

  • Headaches

  • Hip or knee symptoms

  • Muscle and soft-tissue problems

  • Persistent or recurring pain

  • Referred pain ie neural, joint or soft tissue origin

  • Muscle tension and trigger points

  • Stiffness

  • Restricted or uncomfortable movement

Every person is different. Your treatment plan is therefore based on your symptoms, health history, clinical findings and personal goals rather than a standard programme.

Resolve Physio Clinic provides different needle-based approaches, allowing treatment to be adapted according to your assessment.

Trigger Point Needling

Western medical acupuncture uses a variety of needles at acupuncture points within a meridian, muscle-based spindle points or selected areas of fascia. It can sit alongside movement-based rehabilitation and other care aimed at addressing contributing factors. Ear acupuncture and facial rejuvenation needling are also available.

Integrated dry needling focuses on muscles, fascia and connective tissue. Restrictions or altered movement involving these tissues may form part of a wider pattern of pain, stiffness, overload or movement dysfunction. Where appropriate, this technique can be incorporated into a broader treatment and rehabilitation programme.

Trigger points are areas of prolonged muscle or spindle contraction that can cause sensitivity and referral pain. They may be associated with overload, new use or overuse of muscles and joints. Trigger point needling targets relevant areas as part of a wider treatment plan, rather than focusing only on the site of discomfort.

Why Combine Acupuncture With Physiotherapy?

Pain management is the main driver to use acupuncture, however other modalities like Integrated Needling and Trigger Point release are also used to improve mobility and function, and it is not necessarily the only area contributing to the problem. Classic Acupuncture will include areas above and below the joint pain as well as spinal points, depending on patient findings.

Movement elsewhere in the kinetic chain, muscle imbalance, joint stiffness, fascia-related restriction, repeated loading or compensation may all play a part in what technique/s will be used and the reasoning behind treatment selection. Sleep, Kinetic management ie office and car setup and other daily repetitive setups and tasks will be reviewed at if part of a long term outcome.

The benefits of using needling techniques for the patient is that the therapist can cover a much bigger area per treatment, and needling has a longer-lasting effect than only hand/manual techniques. A combination is the best approach in Physiotherapy treatments.

For this reason, acupuncture at Resolve Physio Clinic is supported by a detailed physiotherapy assessment.

Depending on your individual findings, your plan may include:

  • Dry needling

  • Trigger point techniques

  • Hands-on treatment

  • Musculoskeletal assessment

  • Mobility exercises

  • Strengthening

  • Movement retraining

  • Functional rehabilitation

  • Advice for sport, work and everyday activity

If movement restrictions or imbalances may be contributing to recurring symptoms, functional movement screening will also be relevant and it is important to correct old dysfunctional patterns alongside pain or weakness. The goal is to understand the wider factors associated with your symptoms and develop a plan aimed at supporting optimise movement and function.

What Happens at Your Appointment?

Your appointment begins with a discussion about your symptoms, health history, daily activities and what your physio related struggling with and what you would like to achieve. I will assess relevant joints, muscles, movement patterns and other physical factors before discussing the treatment options that may be suitable. If acupuncture or dry needling is appropriate as part of the treatment plan, I will explain the technique, why it is being considered and how it fits within your overall treatment plan. Your care is personalised throughout, with progress reviewed as treatment and rehabilitation continue.

Acupuncture for Persistent & Recurring Pain

Persistent or chronic pain can be complex, and several factors may contribute to how symptoms develop and continue. Rather than approaching persistent pain with a single technique, I use a whole-person functional screening assessment to understand how your symptoms affect movement, physical function and everyday life. Acupuncture may be incorporated into a broader pain-management plan alongside education, movement strategies, exercise and rehabilitation where appropriate. You can find further information about treatment for ongoing symptoms on the musculoskeletal and joint pain service page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does It Hurt?

The needles used vary in thickness, however as a starting point fine needles are then needle of choice, and the sensations experienced can vary from person to person and between treatment areas. Each technique ie Acupuncture, Integrated dry needling and Myofascial Trigger point release have a more specific needle selection, however Integrated Needling is the least sensitive needling technique used. “Patients would often say, they can hardly feel the majority of the needles.” Before beginning, I will explain what you can expect and answer any questions you have.

Is Dry Needling the Same?

Although both approaches use a wider selection of needles, their clinical application can differ. Dry needling commonly focuses on trigger points located in muscles & fascia, while acupuncture may use selected points according to the chosen treatment approach. A trigger point is an anatomically located and sustained spindle contraction within the muscle. Each muscle has it’s own and specifically located points within each muscle. Once activated due to overuse, new use, etc., the muscle can recruit additional muscle groups to help with the load, which causes further dysfunction and pain spreading. The technique used will depend on your assessment, symptoms and individual goals.

Do I Need Physiotherapy as Well?

Your care is based on what is identified during your assessment. Because treatment is delivered within a physiotherapy setting, movement, strength and functional factors can also be considered. Where appropriate, manual therapy. soft tissue techniques & rehabilitation exercises or other treatment may be recommended alongside.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

There is no standard number of sessions suitable for everyone; however, as a starting point, 3-4 sessions will be suggested and then re-evaluated to discuss progress in treatment and in recovery and what is still needed, if any. Acupuncture per say offers 6-12 sessions for ongoing pain management and best pain relief as a stand-alone technique. Classic Acupuncture aims for a build-up effect within the neurological/pain relieving systems within the body. Scientific research shows up to 2 years prolonged effect can be achieved with acupuncture treatments. The amount of treatment required can depend on the nature of your symptoms, how long they have been present, your individual response and your rehabilitation needs. Progress will be reviewed with you as treatment continues throughout your treatment progression.

Can Acupuncture Be Used for Chronic Pain?

Yes and it may form part of a broader approach to managing some persistent pain presentations. Whether acupuncture is suitable will depend on your symptoms, health history and individual assessment. Where appropriate, it can be combined with education, exercise and rehabilitation rather than relying on one treatment alone. Sleep, Kinetic management ie office and car set-up and other daily repetitive setups and tasks will be reviewed at if part of a long-term outcome. is never considered as a once-off treatment as there is no long-term accumulating effect with a single treatment.
